The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act (H.R. 1599) is a dangerous and misleading solution to the GMO labeling question. An overwhelming 90% of Americans want GMOs to be labeled and more than 60 other countries, including China and most of the European Union, already require it. Unfortunately, this bill would make labeling voluntary, not mandatory, and would block mandatory labeling already occurring at the state level.
A better alternative is HR 913, the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know-Act. The act would require the labeling of all products made with genetically modified ingredients. Mandatory labeling would increase transparency in the food industry and help respond to consumer desires for non-GMO food.
