The Honest Company
Launched in 2012, The Honest Company is a leading healthy lifestyle brand committed to creating products that are effective, safe, delightful, accessible, and responsible. Empowering people to live a healthy and happy life, The Honest Company's portfolio of 100+ products address the ever-growing category needs of diapering, personal care, household cleaning, vitamins & supplements, gear, and more. Honest is a mission-driven company and a trusted resource for information, support, and products available across the U.S. and Canada at HONEST.com and in over 3,500 retail locations. All Honest products come with the “Honestly Free Guarantee,” a core commitment to provide clear, credible, and transparent information on all products that upholds uncompromising environmental and health standards for every ingredient. The Honest Company is privately held and headquartered in Santa Monica, California.
The commitment to transparency and sustainability extends across the entire footprint of the company. Among several sustainability goals, Honest is focused on more efficient uses of packaging and recycled materials, renewable energy and energy efficiency, and working towards LEED certification for all their facilities. The Honest Company is also affiliated with ASBC organizational members as a certified B Corporation and a Gold-certified business by Green America. Many of their products are certified organic or BioPreferred by the USDA and have met the EPA’s Design for the Environment standards for usage of safer, environmentally-friendly chemicals. As their website says, “Without our health, without our planet – we have nothing. It's serious business and we're in the business of making it better.”
Through its social goodness platform, The Honest Company provides advocacy, education, and products for the next generation of healthy, happy communities. Honest supports various causes, including programs and crib donations to create safer sleeping environments for infants and cleaning product donations for healthier early education environments and childcare institutions. They’ve joined efforts, spearheaded by First Lady Michelle Obama, to advocate for school lunch reform with FoodCorps and have worked with former White House chef Sam Kass to promote fruits and vegetables as part of the daily diet. In 2014, they opened The Honest Company Ultra Clean Room at The Children’s Environmental Health Center at Mount Sinai to support the research of Dr. Philip Landrigan, a leading scientist and advocate whose work has addressed the damaging effects of toxic chemicals in our environment, including lead, asbestos, pesticides, and BPA. With the support of Honest, Mount Sinai will be a leading research facility for faster, more accurate findings that will safeguard children’s healthy growth and development in the future.
In 2011, Honest co-founders Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan began advocating for the reform of the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), a cornerstone of America’s chemical laws that has remained unchanged since 1976. “Like many other moms out there, I try to buy safe products for my family, but that can’t be the only solution,” Alba told Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families. “You can’t hire a team of scientists to do your shopping for you. At some point the government has to step in and ensure that chemicals are safe before our children are exposed to them.” Since joining ASBC, the Honest Company has been a strong supporter of the Companies for Safer Chemicals Coalition, which is working actively to support TSCA reform that prioritizes transparency, safety, and innovation. As a company with great success using safer alternatives to commonly used chemicals, they’re a perfect example of how strong reform can be a benefit to American businesses.
