A new peer-reviewed scientific study reveals additional health risks caused by flame retardant chemicals in sofa cushions. The research, published in Environmental Science and Technology, highlights the need for revising the 1978 Toxic Substances Control Act to promote responsible business practices and protect consumers. Industry groups, including the Sustainable Furnishings Council, the Specialty Sleep Association, and American Sustainable Business Council support these reforms. A recent poll of small business owners commissioned by ASBC confirms that a clear majority wants the chemical manufacturers to take responsibility for the safety of the chemicals they make and sell.
