ASBC Briefs Capitol Hill on Worker Ownership
On April 13th ASBC briefed 15 staff members of the House New Democrat Coalition (NDC) on the benefits of worker ownership. The NDC is comprised of 61 politically moderate, pro-business Democrats. The conversation centered on how cooperatives (Coops) and employee stock owned plans (ESOPs increase wages and retirement savings, help prevent companies from closing, strengthen local economies, and make the workplace more democratic. The briefing also discussed the barriers and challenges that Coops and ESOPs face in securing government loans and being equally under the federal tax code.
ASBC members New Belgium Brewing and 1Worker1Vote presented along with ASBC staff and Liz Bailey. ASBC continues to make good progress at building a business case for enhanced federal support for worker ownership. A follow up briefing is scheduled for May 4 for NDC congressional members to make the case that worker ownership is a smart strategy to build a stronger middle class.
