Businesses Support Paid Leave on 25th FMLA Anniversary

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). This landmark legislation is the first and only national law designed to help Americans meet the dual demands of work and family and help businesses better retain top talent. FMLA allows workers to take time off when they need it most, without having to worry about losing their jobs or their health insurance. Since 1993 workers have taken FMLA roughly 200 million times. However, about 40% of American employees are currently not eligible for FMLA protections, and worse still, almost half of the workforce cannot afford to take unpaid leave.

Now is the time to build on the success of FMLA with a national paid family leave program. ASBC supports the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) ACT, which allows employees to earn part of their pay while taking time off. 70% of small businesses support a comprehensive, national paid leave program like the FAMILY Act that is beneficial for both employees and employers.
