The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a proposed rule to revise aquatic life-designated use and dissolved oxygen water quality criteria for the Delaware River. The EPA proposed “standards to Protect Aquatic Life in the Delaware River, to ensure that the aquatic life designated uses and dissolved oxygen criteria are set at levels that protect all life stages of oxygen-sensitive species in those zones of the Delaware River, including two species of sturgeon that are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act.” This crucial initiative is not only a step towards ecological preservation but also has the potential to generate substantial economic benefits, estimated to range between $44 million to $62 million annually for the region.
